Have you ever flipped through glossy interior design magazines and wished you could have a unique, organically shaped coffee table that perfectly complements your style and home?
Well, your dream can become a reality! In this step-by-step guide designed by set designer Fanny Hamlin, we'll show you how to create your very own trendy coffee table, regardless of your crafting skill level. Not only will you save money, but you'll also have complete control over the color, shape, and material, ensuring it's a perfect fit for your living space. So, let's dive in and discover how the pieces come together to make your dream coffee table a reality.
Before we get started, you'll need to gather the following materials:
1. MDF board.
2. Jigsaw. (If you do not have one, this tool can be rented from your nearby hardware)
3. Mill, sanding roller, or sandpaper.
4. Any paint color + paint rollers. We chose Clas Ohlson's semi-gloss paint in the color Aged White for a warmer white tone.
5. Prettypegs universal fitting plates.
6. Prettypegs coffee table legs. Select the material, height, and shape that suits your living room! (we'll explore this in more detail later)
One of the fascinating aspects of creating your own coffee table is the ability to tailor it to your preferred style. The length of the table legs plays a crucial role in achieving the desired aesthetic and functionality.
If you're drawn to the serene and harmonious blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design, known as Japandi style, opting for short coffee table legs is an excellent choice. Japandi style is characterized by its minimalism, clean lines, and a sense of Zen-like simplicity. Short table legs create a low-profile coffee table, which aligns perfectly with the Japandi ethos. These tables sit close to the ground, creating an intimate and relaxed atmosphere in your living space. They're ideal for placing low seating arrangements like floor cushions or a Japanese-inspired tatami mat seating area around the table. This arrangement encourages a cozy, close-to-the-ground experience, perfect for casual gatherings, meditation, or simply enjoying a cup of tea.
On the other hand, if you envision your coffee table as a versatile piece that can also serve as a dining table for casual meals, then tall table legs are the way to go.
Higher coffee table legs provide ample space underneath, making it easier to sit comfortably in chairs or even on a sofa while enjoying a meal. This setup is practical for smaller living spaces or studio apartments where a separate dining table might not fit. It allows you to maximize the functionality of your coffee table, serving as both a stylish centerpiece and a practical dining surface.
Moreover, taller legs can give the table a more traditional or mid-century modern appearance, which may be in line with your overall design aesthetic.
Begin by sketching your desired shape onto the MDF board, ensuring it aligns with your vision.
Precision is key: carefully cut out the shape you've designed using a jigsaw tool.
Smooth out any rough edges: employ a mill or sandpaper to achieve that desirable, beveled texture.
Time to add color: start with the first layer of paint as your base coat, and then apply a second layer. For a flawless and consistent finish, we recommend using rollers.
Now, it's time to attach your chosen coffee table legs. Place your tabletop upside down, position the universal fitting plates in your desired locations, and mark where the screws will go. Attach the universal fitting plates with the wooden screws included, and then simply attach our legs by screwing them on.
Congratulations! You've successfully created your own dream coffee table. Place it in your living space and admire the one-of-a-kind piece that reflects your style and creativity. Whether you've opted for short legs for a Japandi-inspired vibe or tall legs for versatile dining, your coffee table will be a focal point in your home, showcasing your craftsmanship and design sensibilities. Don't be surprised if friends and family ask you where they can get a similar piece; you can proudly say, "I made it myself!"

Now that you've completed your coffee table, you can further customize it to suit your personal preferences and home decor. Here are some additional ideas and tips to make your coffee table even more special:
Decorative Accents: Consider adding decorative elements like mosaic tiles, decoupage, or even a custom-designed tabletop decal. These additions can bring a unique touch to your coffee table and make it truly one-of-a-kind.
Tabletop Finish: Experiment with different tabletop finishes such as epoxy resin. Epoxy can create a glossy, high-end look and protect your tabletop from wear and tear. You can also explore different paint colors or patterns to match your decor.
Storage Solutions: If you're tight on space, think about incorporating storage options into your coffee table design. You can add drawers, shelves, or hidden compartments to keep your living room clutter-free.
Tabletop Accessories: Personalize your coffee table with accessories like candles, vases, or a decorative tray. These items can change with the seasons or your evolving style, giving your living room a fresh look. Did you know that we also offer candle holders that are designed with some of our most popular legs in mind? If you go for the Otto leg, why not go for the Otto Candle holder to complete the look?!

To ensure your custom coffee table stays in top condition, follow these maintenance and care tips:
Regular Cleaning: Dust and clean your coffee table regularly to prevent dirt and debris from accumulating. Use a soft, damp cloth for routine cleaning.
Avoid Excessive Weight: While your coffee table is designed for everyday use, avoid placing heavy or sharp objects directly on the tabletop to prevent scratches or damage.
Use Coasters: If you enjoy placing beverages or hot items on your coffee table, use coasters to protect the surface from moisture or heat-related damage.
Inspect and Tighten: Periodically check the attachment of the table legs to ensure they remain secure. Tighten any screws or fittings if necessary.
Refinishing: If your coffee table's finish becomes worn over time, consider refinishing it to restore its original beauty.
One of the fantastic advantages of the coffee table you've created is its versatility. Not only did you have the freedom to choose the ideal coffee table legs during the initial creation, but you can also swap out the legs to adapt your coffee table to different seasons and moods.
As the seasons change, so can your coffee table. Imagine starting with short, cozy legs for the fall and winter months. These short legs create an inviting atmosphere that's perfect for sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace. But when spring and summer roll around, you can easily swap them out for taller legs to give your living space a lighter, more open feel. This transformation can help your home transition seamlessly between the cozy comfort of winter and the fresh, airy vibes of summer.
Your living space can reflect your mood or the occasion you're celebrating. Hosting a formal dinner party? Opt for taller legs to create an elegant dining atmosphere. Planning a casual game night with friends? Switch to shorter legs for a relaxed, laid-back vibe. The ability to customize your coffee table legs allows you to set the perfect tone for any gathering or everyday living.
Leg Swapping Instructions:
Select Your Desired Legs: Choose the coffee table legs that align with the season or mood you want to create. Whether it's short, tall, or a different style altogether, the process remains straightforward.
Remove Existing Legs: Carefully unscrew the existing coffee table legs and store them safely. You'll want to keep them in good condition for future use.
Attach the New Legs: Position the universal fitting plates for the new legs in the desired locations on your tabletop. Mark where the screws will go, attach the plates, and then screw on the new legs.
Enjoy the Transformation: Once you've completed the leg swap, step back and admire the refreshed look of your living space. It's amazing how something as simple as changing coffee table legs can have a significant impact on the overall ambiance.
By having the option to swap coffee table legs, you can continually reinvent and personalize your living space to match the seasons, your current mood, or any special occasions. It's a creative and practical way to keep your home decor fresh and exciting year-round.
In addition to being a cost-effective and satisfying DIY project, your custom coffee table is now a versatile centerpiece that evolves with you and your living space. Whether it's a change of seasons, a shift in mood, or a special gathering, you have the power to transform your coffee table to perfectly suit the moment. This level of adaptability ensures that your coffee table remains a beloved and functional part of your home for years to come.
